The source I chose has no specific author specified, but is a website owned by the American Civil Liberties Union. They are a well known organization that speaks for human rights and teaches the general public what rights they have.  The link I have is an article written by the website that mainly dives into the topic about why we should be worried that the government has so much information about us. It dives into what mischievous things the government does with the info known about us. They base their whole argument on the quote “History has shown that powerful, secret surveillance tools will almost certainly be abused for political ends and turned disproportionately on disfavored minorities.” This is definitely true if you look at past governments and is very scary to think about. The main target of all this surveillance is minority groups as stated on the website. Information is used in ways to violate our rights to privacy, free speech, due process, and association.

This second source isn’t as accredited as the first simply because it is wikipedia, however the information given on this source is very disturbing. It shows the list of all the major government surveillance projects going on around the world.It lists ten major countries and shows ways the government surveils its citizens. The most disturbing factor of this website in my own opinion is that the United States has the most surveillance over any of the other countries and has many programs that are happening without our knowledge. The one thing that stood out to me the most was, “NSA ANT catalog: a 50-page document listing technology available to the United States National Security Agency (NSA) ANT division to aid in cyber-surveillance.” There are 50 pages simply written of all the technology the government has to simply watch over us. There is no need to have that many items to watch over citizens. Something has to be wrong for that to be the case. There is definitely a lot more going on than meets the eye.

This source is an article from the uncle library database. It is written by Tamara Dinev and Paul Hart. They both attend Florida Atlantic University and are part of the business school there. This article written by them called “Internet privacy concerns and beliefs about government surveillance – An empirical investigation”. It is a study done to understand peoples perception of internet privacy and how willing people would be to give up private information online. They did this study through Lisrel, a database where they could test their theoretical model based on privacy. A total of 422 people were part of the study. Through vigorous studying, they noticed that people had a negative affect towards the government intruding their privacy, but a positive effect to disclosing personal information.

This second source is only somewhat related to my topic. It is an article describing what government exactly is. Not many people really look at government as a group of people governing over the wide mass, but generally as one. There are many different sectors of our government here in the United States. The article is written by Paul Cleveland. Paul Cleveland is professor of Business Administration and Economics at Birmingham Southern College. He has a PHD and is a very well qualified man. The article is called “Government: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly”. It talks of not just the United States’ government, but of government in general. He goes over how government is needed when there are large masses of people and of how government has distinguished evil in the past and will continue to. However, he also talks about how even though governments can do good, that does not equate them from the equation of evil. With proper limitation of power, government can not only be good, but can be righteous.

This source I chose is an article with a couple videos attached to it that talks about the ways the government is invading our privacy and how morally right it is. It is called “Government monitoring every aspect of your life?” and was written by Greg Corombos. He is the news director for Radio America and is well accredited man. This article touches the subject of major privacy invasion that has been going on since 2012 and how it is being brushed by our heads by the people ruling us. A recent discovery released by a John Whitehead, claims that the government has been using a radar called the doppler.It is in the hands of many law enforcement officers. It is pretty much a radar that looks like binoculars and allows the person to see through houses in the form of heatwaves. So pretty much you can be located in your house at any time and the person watching can know exactly what you are doing when you do it. It is definitely a scary piece of technology to be used on citizens because it is a major invasion of privacy.

    These sources make me want to know the reason why the government is doing what they are doing. Is it really for safety, or is there something else out there going on that we don’t have general knowledge on. I am going to look at history, governments who have done the same, and what their reasons where.

    My topic isn’t changing, its more of evolving. I don’t understand why or what it is I’m looking for through the research process, but it is definitely making it more fun for me and I’m learning a lot more than I would’ve if not for it.

My topic is the question of “why the government needs to monitor our social media and how they do so?” The reason I chose to look into this topic was because of the fact that there are many conspiracy theories out in the world about why they do so. Whether its to sell our information to third parties or to keep people from finding out the “truth”, how correct are these theories. Well, the first thing I wanted to dive into was “What is a conspiracy?” and “How reliable is the information of a conspiracy?” The source I chose to answer these questions is from a political psychology book. There is an article in the book that talks about such. Its called “Belief in Conspiracies”and was written by Marina Abalakina-Paap, Walter G. Stephan, Traci Craig, W. Larry Gregory. In the article, they look into beliefs in specific conspiracies and attitudes toward the existence of certain conspiracies. From their research they noticed that high levels of anomie, authoritarianism, and powerlessness, along with a low level of self-esteem, were related to beliefs in specific conspiracies, whereas high levels of external locus of control and hostility, along with a low level of trust, were related to attitudes toward the existence of conspiracies in general. This all correlates to the idea that people who feel the need to dwell into conspiracies tend to feel powerless or at a disadvantage. Their research also showed that conspiracies do not correlate with the idea that people feel the need to make conspiracies to simplify complex events. Through this research, I can somewhat say that conspiracies can never truly believed a hundred percent, but the possibility is definitely there.

The most surprising/interesting thing about this source to me is that it never once says that its proven that conspiracies can’t be true. Ive always thought that a conspiracy was just a speculation of events put into one to put the pieces together for everything to make sense. I was hoping the source would say otherwise, but it did not.

This source is taken out of a book and I’m pretty sure the authors referred to all the sources in the back of the book. I was unable to find anything cited in the article.

Why derive conspiracies from the work of our government trying to keep us safe? What are some red flags on social media that the government uses to their advantage of keeping us safe?

  • Describe the key claims-The key claims of this article were to go over news of the government speaking to the citizens through social media and to explain how they would do so.
  • Select examples to illustrate-Governments implementation of its use of social media. A better understanding of how social media works.
  • Present the Gist- In the article, the writer developed a central tone that sounded very neutral. This indicated that the writer was simply giving news in a non-bias way of how the government will start using social media. Not only will it be local governments, but all the way up to the federal government.
  • Contextualize-The article I chose is called “Social Media and Government”. It was written by Nick Bilton, and published by the New York Times in 2012. During the time of the publication, social media was not nearly as popular as it is now. It was back when Instagram only first got introduced in society, and Facebook and Myspace were still “cool”. The reason the author wrote on the subject was because it was the first time the government ever decided to put their foot into social media. They decided to not only surveil it but to also be a part of it. It is much easier bringing the news to social media than to the people through other means. The article simply is a news source and nothing more. It talks about how and why the government will step foot into social media on a local government scale and a federal government scale. The purpose of them doing so as stated in the article is “these new government enterprise solutions were good for business, consumers and government.”

This source really stood out to me because it was a scientific article with data charts and in depth statistics on specifically vaccine testing. The main goal behind the research was to see how much companies actually tested the vaccines to check their safety. The results are quite shocking. Many diseases the vaccines studied were proven to give by the study, were not known previously even though they were approved and given to many patients. The article was written in August 2011. The author of this article was the GM LEE Affiliation. The Publisher is the American journal of preventive medicine. Both the author and publisher are well known in the science world. The authors(multiple authors) are part of the children’s hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. They are the group that studies child health care in the Center for Child health care Studies.

This article definitely made me wonder a lot about vaccines, but it somewhat took a different route in my mind. If the government is allowing us, and somewhat forcing us to take these vaccines without proper testing, is the same happening with processed foods, goods, and even just regular medicines? This definitely wants me to look into many different items other than vaccines because I’m very self-conscious about what I allow to come in contact with my body. I believe that the more natural, the better.

The most interesting or surprising thing about this source is that it is a video filmed in the year 1961. It talks about the way the government pushed the polio vaccine on residents living in Columbus, Georgia. Through various in person surveys and making the image of the vaccine look good, many people were vaccinated. The main goal was to have everyone vaccinated three times. Their claims were that it would not only help push away polio disease, but also make everyone smarter in a sense. It was a very weird way to market the vaccine, and was not talked about much in the video. The purpose of the video was to make vaccines look good in the eyes of the people. The producer of the video was Prelinger Archives.

Learning more and more about my topic through research and inquiry, I definitely see change in the way I want to dress my topic. I really want to stray away from researching vaccines alone and want to step into a more detailed question about the things our government hides from us.

 

 

 

Argument

 

Reading this article, I found many things I do that are recognized. For starters, I always find myself framing someone else’s work. Like said in the article, a good question can always help you think through what you are interested in. Many times I find myself brainstorming or researching for an assignment, and I always look for a decent question to follow first. It helps tremendously with figuring out what it is I am looking for. I also find myself trying to identify the situation at hand. If you know what is going on in the situation, the inquiry and research finding becomes easier and more understandable. Greene distinguishes in the article between reading as inquiry and reading as searching for information by explaining it as if reading as inquiry allows you to be more specific. It creates a goal as to what you are reading for rather than just looking for something that you don’t even know what it you truly want to find. When Greene talks about framing, he means going off of information that is already there. To frame is to copy and use for your own purpose. I’ve noticed many writers do this in their writings. If you look at Turkle, she frames with the many experiences people had based off of her topic, technology. Argument as conversation definitely does change the way I think of reading and/or writing about research. When someone argues rather than just converse on a topic, they do look for more points of view and find themselves learning more than they would’ve in the first place. The article brought up a lot of inquiry techniques as well as the way inquiry works. It allowed me to learn a little more about research in a questioning style. Inquiry allows for broader and a better understanding of research.

Library Activity

Watching the videos on the school Library somewhat refreshed my memory of how I used it last semester. I never really used books on my own for research and to learn things, but when classes require it, I definitely know how to find them. I didn’t really find anything promising in the library as far as sources for my research just because I know I won’t really  read a book on my topic since most of the information is online. The library however is very helpful when it comes to finding solid information on topics or another persons perspective on a topic.

I’ve been going to the library since I started at UNCC. It’s a very natural environment for me. Many of my friends and I meet up there to study together or hangout. Whether its studying for a final or simply completing some homework, I find the library environment very helpful. I noticed that in the library, you see two different types of students. The ones that are either studying/doing homework or people that simply want to hangout. I really like how the library caters to both types because most libraries I’ve gone to in the past just allow people to be quite. I like the path our university took with this library.

My favorite place to hangout in the library is hard to decide on. I like the second floor where the booths are a lot because thats where me and my friends always hangout. However I do also like the their floor because for some reason I get my work done faster and more efficiently there. I think it is because thats one of the quieter floors and there aren’t as many distractions. In the future, Im sure ill use the library just as I’ve been because I do feel as if I’m taking full advantage of it now.

I have not been looking for a new perspective on this topic because of my neutrality towards it, but this source definitely swayed me away from being “pro-vaccine”. I still need to learn more to pick a side, but the evidence is just too hard to ignore. The writer of this article brings up many factual and statistically proven evidence that vaccines are worse than better for you. He shows many side-effects of them and even breaks down how they are inadequately tested. The most interesting thing I found about the source was the section of the inadequate testing done on vaccines. “Safety or toxicity of vaccines is studied for short term rather than long-term. Many studies are limited to just a few weeks. When a vaccine is tested, it is given to healthy people and they are only given that one injection.” This raised awareness in me that not much research is being done to test vaccines thoroughly as we believe.

The source does refer to many other sources and cites them all at the bottom of the website. This was done to show the truth behind the topic and where the author received the information from. It also makes the author very credible.

This link shows a video of a mother who’s child received autism as a side effect of many vaccines when the child was a baby. It all happened so quickly that there was nothing to do to prevent it.

This source makes me want to look at benefit sides to vaccines because it never once mentioned how they actually do prevent diseases and illnesses in people.

Approaches to Inquiry

The articles given to read asked many different questions. They all related to inquiry in one way or another. These projects definitely represent what I think of inquiry. Asking a question that leads to a sort of answer to only ask another question. It is sort of a never ending cycle, but it always keeps you learning and curious. The article “Seeking Revenge In The ‘Underworld’ Of Stolen Bikes”, posed the question of how do bikes get stolen and why. It leads to many questions being asked through a long process of hunting down bike thieves and attempting to prevent them. I believe the writer represented inquiry in the way his research was put out. It all led back to the question of what caused my bike to be stolen.

On my own I do enjoy learning many things and asking questions. I always ask my self why I am alive and whats my purpose. I am always learning new things because of this as well. However I don’t believe it is related to inquiry and the whole process it goes by. I do school work that requires me to ask questions and do a lot of research, so I think that is inquiry, but it is never involved in my life fully.

I read an article in “Humans of New York” about a man who was always an outsider in his life because of the many tattoos he had and the lifestyle he chose to live.The whole idea behind the article, I think, was the question of “why judge?”. In the article the man states, “There’s no such thing as a true outsider. We all have to breathe. We all have to eat. We all have to work. I wanted to run away from everything but I ran into myself.” I think his statement is true and the idea behind the article is surely an example of inquiry.

Curiosity

Curiosity is defined as a strong desire to know or learn something. After being a part of the parlors we’ve had in class and after all the readings we’ve done out of the book, many things have been touched on that sparked my interests. The whole idea behind technology taking values away from us became the overall main topic. I thought of this to be very interesting. Never once n my life have I stepped back and thought for a second that we are becoming duller and less emotionally stable simply because of the utilities we have right by our sides. It definitely makes sense with all the evidence provided in the book and what we talked about in class. I was also very interested in the idea that sparked a sort of conspiracy. Why does our government allow such technology if they know of the side effects, and why use the technology in ways to somewhat “control” the outcome of events and people.

I feel as if I and attracted to these topics because I have always been a major conspiracy theorist. Thinking of what lies behind the scenes has always been a sort of hobby of mine. I believe that nothing ever seems as it is because people always have bigger goals than they put out there. The whole idea behind technology taking values away can be used to others advantages if done right. I dislike the fact that people lost empathy and conversational skills because of the devices we have by our sides. It is something that we can fix however and something we must work towards fixing. There is definitely the usefulness and utility that comes with technology, but we can not allow it to hurt us more than it helps.

I feel that it was no mistake the way social media is setup and the way how it accessible to almost anything online. I believe that someone out there has a greater goal in mind. Whether it is to control the people, or even achieve large sums of money, its wrong. As we said in class, media can definitely be single sided and online you choose what side you want. That can be a dangerous thing in our society and it definitely hurts conversational skills as mentioned in the book.
